The film is set in nineteenth century Ireland. The main character is Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close), shy man who is actually a woman. In order to lead a normal life, be independent and perform selected profession has to hide his true identity. He works as a waiter in one of the most luxurious hotels. He is accompanied by his close friend - Hubert Page (Janet McTeer), a handsome young man who is a painter by profession, in addition also a woman.
